Dear friends,

As we have previously discussed, in the orthodox religion Saturday is the day when the deceased are commemorated, so today, 20.11.2010, AVAC Bucharest did the following:

  • We loaded used footwear brought by children in a truck having banners with WDOR;
  • The truck drove through the city centre and we stopped in the Constitution Square, in front of the House of Parliament
  • Within a space previously delimited by the Bucharest City Hall, our partner in this action, we made a circle out of these footwear and place amongst them little candles with the help of the children. We lit the candles but due to the unfavourable weather some were blown off.
  • I spoke in front of the people attending about: the significance of this day; the road safety decade, as a global and European effort; mobility and responsibility – current necessity; the duties of the civil society acting in this domain; the triad – the real dimension of the road crash phenomenon, the sensitization of all participants to traffic in order to observe the rules, and to determine the local and central authorities in order to reduce the road crashes number; the road police is not the only responsible for the road insecurity… there are others having attributions in this domain, the risks of the road insecurity should be enlisted through the threats to the national security, the road safety should become state policy, otherwise the state becomes accomplice to genocide.
  • We had a moment of silence and then a girl read “Letter to the grown-ups”  through which she was asking the parents, the educators and all grown-ups to observe the laws – we shall translate it and send it to you;
  • We had a religious service held by two priests;
  • We gave away some aliments – as it is the orthodox custom, also we distributed magazines and books,
  • Because last year in Bucharest 136 people died in road crashes, the children were given 136 helium balloons, many of them released these in the air.

The entire action lasted for approximately one hour. We shall create an album on Facebook with pictures from this event. As usual, neither the press nor the government were interested.

Best wishes,   Ion Mihail

President of AVAC MB&JI

BLOODY ASPHALT

Action to educate and sensitize, on the occasion of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, Bucharest, 20th November 2010

In order to present the true dimension of road crashes, to sensitize all the participants in road traffic to respect both the legal stipulations and the other road users, but also to determine the central and local authorities to take the measures that are imposed to reduce the number of victims on highways, roads or streets, on the World Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims, our association – Avac Bucuresti - organizes the action called “BLOODY ASPHALT”, consisting of:

  1. Collecting a number of approximately 136 pairs of worn footwear, representing a part of the number of deceased persons in Bucharest in 2009, footwear mainly brought by children, loading them into a small truck  /- 9.30 hrs;
  2. The truck, covered in banners and accompanied by a police car, shall carry a circuit through Bucharest on the route: Opera Park, Stirbei Voda Street, Dem I. Dobrescu Street, University Square, Union Square, Constitution Square – between 9.40 - 10.00 hrs;
  3. While unloaded, the footwear is aligned on the sidewalk in front of the House of People, having in between candles which shall be lighted by children. Speeches will be held.
