National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims in Canada

Official National Ceremony, Mother Teresa High School, Ottawa Ontario Canada

This year, we remembered our lost or injured family members, friends and fellow Canadians who have been affected by road crashes, in an official ceremony at Mother Teresa High School in Ottawa, on November 17, 2010. This ceremony helped raise awareness of the number of deaths and injuries on Canadian roads and reminded us of the importance of road safety.

The Canadian Global Road Safety Committee hosted the ceremony. There were a total of 13 exhibitors who attended the event: the Ministry of Transportation, the Ottawa Police, the Ottawa Provincial Police, the Distractions Undermining Motorist Behaviour Car (DUMB Car), Arrive Alive, the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA), the Canadian Council Motor Transportation Administrators (CCMTA), Transport Canada Road Safety, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), the Ontario Students Against Impaired Drivers (OSAID), Think First Canada, the Ottawa Victim Services and Car Care Canada.

Transport Canada Minister Chuck Strahl arrived at the event just after noon to participate to the Transport Canada MADD Ribbon cutting in front of Choose Your Ride display of vehicles with the National Day of Remembrance banner.

At the official ceremony there were over 900 students, parents, road safety organizations that were present.  There were speeches from the Transport Canada, Catholic School Board, Principal of the High School, CCMTA, MADD, OSAID and Arrive Alive Drive Sober. Arrive Alive presented the DVD iDRIVE Road Stories that promote road safety to the youth.

Global Road Safety Committee also launched the Leave The Phone Alone While Driving Pledge Campaign (www.Leavethephonealone.ca) encourages everyone to make a pledge to leave the phone alone while driving.
