This is Essam A. Sharaf, Chairman of the Egyptian Road Safety Federation (ERSF).

This federation is newly formed and consists of eleven NGOs working on the area of road safety. This year we decided to join the world and make the first Egyptian Day of remembrance for road traffic victims (Sunday November 21st) in collaboration with WHO and EMRO and several governmental and NGO agencies.

The activities to be undertaken on 21 November 2010

  • ERSF has taken the lead to organize the activities.
  • Based on the household survey that MOH conducted in collaboration with WHO, we succeeded to reach 22 families. 19 families from Cairo and 3 from Upper Egypt.
  • WHO supported us for the family transportation from Upper Egypt
  • Those are middle-low income families, so NGOs succeeded to reach 4 families from high income
  • Four testimonials will be presented on the crash. How it happened, what was the impact at all levels (health, social, economic and quality of life) 2 from the survey and 2 from the high income
  • GARBLT (General authority of roads and bridges) facilitated for us 4 buses for the community transportation
  • MO education facilitated an art competition and cultural competition. 25 arts were selected as the best through a ministerial committee and 5 papers were selected. The idea is to have the kids’ recognition and vision toward the crash and its impact
  • There will be a gallery of the arts and we have requested from the 5 winners at the cultural one to present in a talk of 5 minutes
  • The 30 winners will be present with their school supervisors and certificates will be given to them prepared by ESRS and revised by MO education
  • WHO have kindly supported us with the child friendly injury prevention activity book (WHO-UNICEF) Arabic version (30 books) to be distributed with the certificates
  • Concerned ministries will be present and will give brief remarks on their initiatives and awareness about the burden of RTI and RTD
  • Attendance and speeches of public and religious figures representing the highest Islamic and Christian organizations
  • Celebrities will be present and there will be presentation of their remarks
  • WHO have assisted to share road safety video clips in between the sessions
  • We succeeded to get enough donations from several private sector entities to cover the event activities costs.
